This charter is a personal pledge to demonstrate kindness on a daily basis, the invaluable antidote to the cruelty we see in our world everyday, both neglectful and intentional.
1. Kindness to myself
A wise person said "love my neighbour as myself". How much do I love myself in this moment? I forgive myself for anything that makes me cruel to myself. I relax my muscles and let go of the anxiety that prevents kindness and I dismiss the thoughts of self judgement that cause me harm.
2. Kindness to family, friends and colleagues
When the wheels fall off my wagon I shall remember that it is not the fault of my family, my friends or my work colleagues. I shall not blame them for my short-comings, I shall continue to offer my love, help and kindness to those people in my constellation.
3. Kindness to strangers
I shall not ignore those around me that I do not know. I will not ignore the anguish of another with the excuse that I do not know them. I shall smile when glanced at, I shall offer a tissue to any stranger in tears, I shall offer support to anyone that asks. I will whistle-blow when I observe acts of cruelty.
4. Kindness with money
I shall not hoard my money, but will kindly share my prosperity with those in need. Purchasing "Fair Trade" goods and supporting the local business and reduce my dependency on multi-national companies.
5. Kindness through charity
I will give regularly to charities that support: the most mentally ill, the world's poorest people and the most endangered animals. I will always support a Big Issue vendor and kindly engage with any homeless person in need, always offering food or drink.
6. Kindness to animals
I will offer my love and best wishes to every animal I meet, remembering that their status on the planet is as special as mine, no animal is less important than me. I will not eat meat or fish and wherever I can I will decline the offer of any diary product that involves the use of drugs, force feeding or other acts of human cruelty to animals.
7. Kindness to the planet and its precious resources
I will consider my actions in the form of carbon emissions, pollution of water supplies, recycling as many items as possible and always collecting litter that others leave behind. I will not waste the items that I purchase and will not purchase more than I need.
8. Kindness despite fear
When I am afraid to undertake any of the above I shall remember that kindness takes courage and will use the courage I have within me to overcome my fear of ridicule and rebuke.
9. And kindness with humour!
My kind life will not be a life of gloom, it will be a life that smiles, laughs and jokes when the challenges of everything feels too much. I will share my humour and goodwill with those around me.
May I remember my charter, in every moment of every day, in thought, word and deed.
